Moment of unease upon realizing that I have mostly have learned about classic mother/daughter films not by directly watching them, but by watching drag number upon drag number based on them.
Several come to mind, immediately....and I'm disappointed to not be able to think of more with black women, frankly. But: "Secrets and Lies", "Please Give", "Crooklyn", "Carrie(?)", "Terms of Endearment"(showing my age), "Black Swan"....lotte dudes directing.
Ooh... so many! Volver (Almodóvar), Life is Sweet (Mike Leigh), Fast Color (Julia Hart), High Tide (Gillian Armstrong), Daughters of the Dust (Julie Dash), The Second Mother (Anna Muylaert), Saving Face (Alice Wu),
and can’t forget Postcards from the Edge (Mike Nichols classic).
Some of these aren't centrally about mothers and daughters but in my mind resonate on the subject somehow: Anywhere But Here, Waitress, Little Women, Stepmom, and I second White Oleander for sure. I'm just now recognizing a Susan Sarandon theme...
I just rewatched Love and Basketball and while the love story between Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps gets a great deal of well-deserved attention, the mother daughter relationship between Sanaa and Alfre Woodard is one of the most complex and loving and angry and different I've seen between a black mother and daughter on film. Such a great movie!
Ladybird!

Got to agree with the folks who said Lady Bird!
